Learn About Sufism
Welcome to Stars on a Dark Night’s new website! Originally created in 2006, this ten-year-old project was due for a face lift. I hope you enjoy the new format.
This site is a reflection of my personal journey on the path of Sufism. My first encounters, almost 40 years ago, came through reading books, including the works of Idries Shah and the poems of Jalāl ad-Dīn Rumi. This opened a world of spiritual awareness that was at once, both new and familiar, which I can best describe as reconnecting with a long lost friend.
After several years of hearing stories about a holy man who lived in Cypress, I was able to meet him in London in 1988. Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani, the spiritual leader of the Naqshbandi Sufi Order, is a man whose incredible life example and teachings continue to live in the hearts of his followers, even after his passing in 2014.
The intention of this site is to inspire the hearts and minds for those with an interest in the Sufi way-- those who are new to Sufism, those who are following a path, as well as those who are searching.
Sufism opens the doors to a rich spiritual life, 'how to be in the world, but not of the world'; how to rise above our lower selves which imprisons our spirit and dictates our thoughts and actions; how to be more forgiving, loving, kind and merciful because that is the primordial essence of our being.
Remembrance of God is the meditation and guiding principle of Sufism. The gift of The Ninety-nine Attributes of God, or the Divine Names of Allah is the place to start for an understanding of His All-encompassing, All-pervading, All-powerful nature.
Peace and blessings to all who come here. May God shower His Mercy on you.
